About YICUP

YICUP: The Philosophy of One

YI comes from the Chinese character for one, a state of origin and oneness. The brand begins with a single question: What if we honored the uniqueness of a single moment in fire?

The Artisans

Wuyi Mountain Ceramic Artists

YICUP draws from the practice of local Wuyi Mountain ceramic artists whose work with dragon kilns is shaped by patience, repetition, and respect for what fire chooses to leave behind.

“These cups are not forced into being. Clay is prepared, flame is tended, and the kiln decides what survives.”

The Origin

YICUP is not a product development exercise. It is an experiment, and a dialogue between clay, flame, and time.

YICUP grows out of the wider Wuyi Mountain practice of preparing clay, tending flame, and accepting the natural result that a firing leaves behind. The current collections translate that language into five distinct Jian Zhan directions: the Classical Collection, the Classical Conical Collection, the Zodiac Collection, the Gaiwan Collection, and the Crackle Glaze Collection.
